Tanning without erythema: 7 mistakes to avoid at the solarium

From the choice of cabin to after-treatment: how to avoid redness and skin tightness while enjoying only the sun-kissed side of the session.

A slight redness after the first session may be normal, but the actual erythema - hot, swollen and sore skin - is a sign that you have exceeded your UV dose. Preventing it is easy if you know the main risk factors.

What to do instead

1. Skipping the Skin Control

Use Skin Control every time and always print the ticket: indicate maximum minutes according to your phototype and the current state of your skin.

2. Increasing exposure times to be faster

Choose your favourite cabin (e.g. Prestige 1600 or Sunrise 7200) Start with a few minutes if your skin is very fair.

3. Increasing minutes of independent thinking

Respect the display tables that you will find on the ticket or on the website or posted at the cabin entrance.

4. Two days in a row

Respect the 48-hour break: melanogenesis needs time.

5. Forget goggles

The eye area is among the most sensitive; use goggles and if you have particularly sensitive lips, use cocoa butter.

6. Apply self-tanning creams before the session

They can occlude pores and increase heat.

7. Immediate hot shower

Wait at least two hours, use lukewarm water and a mild cleanser to avoid stressing the skin barrier.

Internal and external hydration

Drink 300-500 ml of water before the session and apply a lotion with aloe, panthenol or niacinamide within 30 min. Hydrated skin dissipates heat better.

"Photo friendly" diet

Supplement beta carotene (carrot, pumpkin), lycopene (tomato) and polyphenols (green tea) to increase natural UV resistance.

Warning signs

If blisters appear after 12 h or the skin is still very hot, stop the cycle for at least 7 days and apply a soothing gel; if necessary, consult a dermatologist.

Avoiding erythema does not mean slowing down the result: with a gradual protocol, melanin fixes deeper, the colour lasts longer and the skin remains soft.
