Type 3 lamps: what really changes for your skin
Swiss regulations, intensity reduced to 0.3 W/m² and advantages in terms of safety and tanning effectiveness.
On 1 December 2020, the Federal Ordinance O-LRNIS introduced the obligation to use Type 3 lamps in Swiss solariums. Blue Light has adapted all its cabins: let's see what this means in practice and why it is an advantage for users.
1. Type 4 to Type 3: difference in power
- Type 4 (old standard): up to 0.6 W/m² of effective UV irradiance.
- Type 3: maximum 0.3 W/m², equal to the level at midday in the Mediterranean.
Result: same tan, but in two sessions instead of one, with half the skin stress.
2. Main benefits
- Reduction of erythema -34%
BAG 2023 data on 40 certified centres. - More even tanning
Stable irradiance, lower risk of "red patches". - Greater comfort
Less perceived heat, more comfortable seating.
3. The technique behind the standard
Type 3 solariums use special filters and selective spectrum phosphors that cut out some of the most erythematogenic UVB rays, while retaining the amount necessary for vitamin D production.
4. Impact on exposure times
- Skin type II: from 6 minutes (Type 4) to 9 minutes (Type 3) for the same level of tanning.
- The Skin Control ticket is already calibrated to the Type 3 standard, so no manual calculations are required.
5. Frequently asked questions
- Do I need more sessions? ⇒ Often yes: 2–3 more sessions per year, but without any risks.
- Does the tan last less? ⇒ No, melanin oxidises in the same way.
- Do I need sunscreen? ⇒ Not in the salon; however, apply it after your session if you go out in natural sunlight.
Ultimately, Type 3 lamps represent a step forward in UV safety: lower intensity, same aesthetic results, happier skin. One more reason to choose a certified centre such as Blue Light.
